Metal NZ Kiwi Bird Artwork raises funds to help save the Coromandel Brown Kiwi

New Zealand artists Ninette Kruger and Anna Mollekin are both passionate about conservation and protecting our natural environment.

They have collaborated to create a bespoke pewter Kiwi artwork.

Through the sale of this piece , we were able to donate $400 to the Moehau Environment Group Kiwi Sanctuary in the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand.

According to The Department of Conservation, there are only about 68,000 Kiwi birds left in New Zealand...

We're losing 2% of our unmanaged kiwi every year (around 20 per week…).

The main culprits are stoats and cats which kill 70% of kiwi chicks. If nothing is done, Kiwi birds face extinction in the wild within 30 years.

Raising funds for this amazing charity assisted them in installing more traps for predator control, giving our precious Kiwi a better chance of survival.

Handcrafted by Tauranga metal Artist, Ninette Kruger,
this bespoke pewter Kiwi Bird Metal Artwork is the only one of its kind.

Crafted from imported pewter sheet, Ninette transferred Anna Mollekin's "Kiwi's Lace" drawing onto the pewter before hand-embossing each detail and bringing it to life as a 3-dimensional metal artwork.

Artists Anna and Ninette have donated 10% of the proceeds to the Kiwi Sanctuary to help save the precious Coromandel Brown Kiwi.

Donate Directly to the Kiwi Sanctuary

Moehau Environment Group is helping to save Coromandel Brown kiwi.

Nationally, Kiwi are in trouble. The main culprits are stoats and cats which kill 70% of kiwi chicks. If nothing is done, Kiwi face extinction in the wild within 30 years. Yet here on the Coromandel, kiwi populations are flourishing due to intensive predator control efforts.

Our Kiwi Sanctuary has 920 traps spread over 10,400 hectares. Since establishment in 2005 we have caught over 1750 stoats, 815 weasels, 12,800 rats, 270 hedgehogs and 35 feral cats, making a huge difference to the breeding success of resident Kiwi. Traps are baited with donated eggs or salted rabbit meat, and are currently checked 12 times a year.
